Runaway Angel

I didn't realize I missed you until I've heard from read about you by accident. I miss you and the Bravo gang... and the warpzone! College wouldn't be as exciting (not to mention, nerve-wrecking at times) without you. I've read your entry about Bravo and I couldn't help but smile. :)

I still consider you as one of the most loyal friends I've ever had. I am happy now because of you. I wasn't able to tell you this but..thank you. I owe you big time, gurlfriend. I wish we could catch up sometimes. *one big squishy hug*

Ps. You're one of my favorite writers of all time. I'm still keeping those stories you've written. Their awesome, by the way. :)

Si Sir Nic

Last year, January 8, 2007, I posted an entry about Sir Nic, which you could still find here: http://commonlysenseless.blogspot.com/2007/01/prof-monico-atienza.html . That was when I found out that he's on a coma. It was a big shocking news for me since Sir Nic was the only UP professor who believed that I could make it in life -- and he didn't mind being a little vocal and over the top makulit of reminding me about it. Despite of my rebellious and stubborn attitude (kasagsagan ng Dark Ages ko yun eh), he's been even more persistent to pull me right back on track.

Since I've read the news about his condition, naging ugali ko nang i-google siya every month. Just to find out how he was.

Now, exactly one month and one day after I've read the sad news, I came across a more disheartening news that he already passed away last December. I've read below article that tells about how he suffered while fighting the Marcos dictatorship. Nung magka-email kami at tinatawag niya kong "email pal" at minsan, "email sweetheart".

_____________
Activists of 2 generations mourn death of ‘Sir Nic’
By Volt Contreras
Inquirer
Posted date: December 07, 2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Activists from two generations -- those who survived fighting the Marcos dictatorship and those too young to have gone through that long, dark night -- are in mourning for Monico Atienza, beloved comrade, inspiring professor and, perhaps, a study of what one stands to gain or lose for a revolutionary cause.

After lapsing into a coma a year ago, Atienza succumbed to throat cancer on Wednesday afternoon at his home on the University of the Philippines campus in Diliman, Quezon City, where he taught Rizal and Pilipino subjects.

“Nic,” who in the 1960s became secretary general of the militant Kabataang Makabayan and in 2003 worked to reorganize the old street cadres from the historic First Quarter Storm (FQS) marches of 1970, was 60 years old.

Disease finally felled the man who, some three decades ago, barely survived the torture chambers of the martial law regime and later an assassination attempt allegedly carried out by the post-Marcos military.

In separate interviews Thursday with the Inquirer, two of Atienza’s close friends -- Boni Ilagan, chair of the FQS Movement of which Nic was founding president, and UP professor Luis Teodoro -- remembered the man for his convictions, which were neither eroded by time nor bowed for expediency.

With a tone of reverence, Ilagan and Teodoro both described Atienza as one of the most “heavily tortured” detainees during martial law.
A UP student who went underground two years before martial law was declared in 1972, Atienza was arrested in 1974. He was about 27.

Never bowed to torturers
Atienza’s genitals were “burned,” the two men said, although their memories conflicted. Ilagan said the torturers used rolled-up newspapers or comic books for a torch; Teodoro said a lighter was used.

This was on top of the other brutalities -- electric shock, sleep deprivation, being left naked in a room with the air-conditioner going full-blast and repeated beatings.

Atienza was also injected with “truth serum” to induce a confession, Ilagan said.

He will be praised for many things, but his “biggest triumph was that he never bowed to his torturers,” Ilagan said. “He did not crack and send more into the hands of the enemy.”

Nervous breakdown
Atienza eventually suffered a nervous breakdown during his detention and was brought to the V. Luna military hospital. He was still a patient there when he was released in 1980, or six years after his arrest, Ilagan said.

Both Ilagan and Teodoro said Atienza might have emerged psychologically scarred from the ordeal.
He seemed more short-tempered, for one thing, Teodoro noted.
Except for a TV interview he granted in 2003, Atienza never spoke publicly about what the then Philippine Constabulary, including a lieutenant named Rodolfo Aguinaldo (later to become governor of Cagayan), did to him in Camp Crame, Ilagan noted.

When both of them were still in prison, Ilagan said, “I saw him being dragged by two escorts [after a torture session] back to his cell. All he had was this blank stare.”

More severely than others
“He was tortured more severely than the others probably because he was suspected of being a ranking officer of the communist party and, therefore, knew a lot about the leadership structure,” Ilagan, a playwright who himself endured two years in jail, surmised.
Ilagan recalled that he, Atienza and others were held in what was supposed to be Camp Crame’s armory -- “thick walls, steel doors, one-foot-by- one-foot windows, a place not built for human habitation.”

There were no toilets in the cells. The inmates were provided biscuit cans and old newspapers for their use.

The inmates could hear torture sessions going on in adjacent rooms, and Ilagan was convinced that the PC deliberately let others hear what was going on.

Still fiery
After his release, Atienza was able to re-enroll at UP, and shifted courses from political science to Philippine studies, Ilagan said.

He eventually secured a teaching position at the university and resumed his “fight” as a fiery, sought-after speaker in student forums and as a supporter of progressive groups.

Once, shortly after EDSA I people power uprising in 1986, Teodoro and Atienza were on their way to a colleague’s birthday party.

But the latter decided to turn back upon seeing certain guests at the venue: It was one of those weird occasions when officers of the rightwing Reform the Armed Forces Movement got to mingle with the leftist set.

“I see one of my torturers among them. I think we’re no longer needed here,” Teodoro recalled his hesitant friend saying.

No demand for compensation
And more of Atienza’s true grit showed when the time of reckoning with his jailers finally came: He distanced himself from moves by fellow detainees to demand compensation from the Marcos regime.

Said Ilagan: “He had a different view. I remember him saying, ‘What I went through cannot be compensated in terms of pesos.’

“But he did not stop anyone [from demanding compensation] , and did not campaign against it.”
Added Teodoro: “‘I never thought of receiving any reward for fighting the dictatorship.’ That’s how he also put it.”

Ambush
Atienza, a native of Cuenca, Batangas, would have his next brush with death shortly after EDSA I. (Teodoro said Atienza was disappointed with the results of both EDSA I and II, in which he took part.)

In 1987, Atienza, Bernabe Buscayno, former communist guerrilla commander and then senatorial candidate, and three companions were ambushed in their car by a suspected military death squad.
A piece of shrapnel became embedded in Atienza’s head, and a leg wound sustained from that attack never healed up to the time he had a heart attack in December 2006.

Until then, a mass in his throat that blocked his air passage had remained undetected. He was diagnosed with cancer.

Fund-raisers were held to pay for his continued stay at the Philippine General Hospital, and among those who pitched in were a left-leaning party-list group and a few lawmakers, Ilagan said.

After seven months, friends from the FQS Movement decided to bring him home.

Atienza, who lived apart from his wife and their two sons after he was released from detention, died with two caregivers hired by his comrades at his bedside, Ilagan said.

In less than 24 hours, the first eulogies came in the blogs of his UP students -- those who were not even born yet when their “Sir Nic” was being brutalized for his cause.

Prof. Monico Atienza

Dear Friends,

We are writing you on behalf of Prof.Monico M. Atienza, who has beencomatose since December 23, 2006. An undetected mass in his throatgradually blocked air passage, which finally led to successive heart seizures.

Monico is the president of the FirstQuarter Storm (FQS) Movement, anorganization of activists in the 1960sand 1970s. In various ways, he hascontinuously helped and inspired activists of people's organizationsand institutions, especially the youthand students.

As a political prisoner during martial law, Monico was heavily tortured and held in solitary confinement. Government intelligence claimed thathe was a ranking member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party ofthe Philippines and head of its National Organization Department when he was arrested in 1974. Released in 1977, he went back to the university.

As secretary-general of the militant Kabataang Makabayan (Patriotic Youth) in the late 1960s, he was among the indefatigable architects of the youth and student activism that eventually expanded to help establish today's formidable progressive mass movement in the Philippines.

In 1987, he survived an assassination attempt by a death squad of thePhilippine military which claimed the lives of two colleagues. Monico's health, already deteriorated by thetorture in 1974, all the more worsened with the injuries he sustained in the incident. A shrapnel remains imbedded in his head and a leg wound would not heal to this day.

Now confined at the Central Intensive Care Unit of the Philippine General Hospital, Monico is kept alive by a life support system. His condition remains critically stable.

Monico has no source of income other than his teaching at the university. The meager health benefits available to him are not enough to sustain the costof hospitalization and probable therapy.

Let us all help a great comrade, mentor and friend.

Therefore, pinagawa niya ko ng ilang papers to make up for the 1 million papers that I missed. Nagpaka-bibo sa klase at tapos nag-take ako ng finals (yun iba kasi exempted). Final grade ko ay taraaan! 1.5!!!

He’s reminded of Sisa raw kasi kapag nakikita niya ko. Wag na natin isipin kung bakit. If I remember correctly, pinapapunta pa niya ko sa office niya para kunin ko raw yun gift niya sa akin(I bet libro ni Rizal yun). Pero nakalimutan ko. Naging email pals din kami since then. :(

So imagine my shock when i heard about this news. Honestly, as of now, hindi ko alam kung kasalukuyan pa rin siyang lumalaban gaya noon. Haaay. Sad news. :(

Goodbyes

Flat line.
Code Blue!
CPR.

Buhayin ang namatay na blog. Too much House and Grey's Anatomy marathons, forgive me.

It just occured to me. I never had the chance to give my academic life a proper goodbye. Come on, I've been a struggling student since I was 3 (seryoso! Going back, perhaps because, I am never good at goodbyes. When I get too attached to something, the moment I realized that I will have to let go of that soon, dini-detach ko na agad ang sarili ko. So after I left the university, I held back all my sentiments, pushed it at the back of my head. Move on like nothing had drastically changed in my life.

The problem with my way of dealing with goodbyes is that, soon enough, it haunts me. It creeps out of the selective amnesia portion of my head and hit me back. One time, big time. Usually, it happens in the most unexpected places like while you are queueing for eternity in Edsa Central terminal. Or inside a cramped fx on your way home. Peste talaga.

I should've dealt with this drama queen alter-ego of mine way back pa! Yun tipong andun lang ako, sa comfort of my own bedroom. So that I can even choose my own soundtrack. Freak.

Actually, it's not just the thought of graduation per se that makes me sad. It's the fear. The fear that I might not live my life the right way. That I might screwed up more this time. That I might lose my chance of being successful and finally win the Loser of Her Lifetime Award. I don't want my parents to think na nagkamali sila sa pagpapalaki sakin, dahil hindi yun totoo. Haaahaaay. Drama Queen talaga!!!

On a happier note, there's something I did soooo right...
It's our 4th year ANNIVERSARY!!!!!! Hurray!!! (confetti, drumrolls, fireworks)

Out of the Blue..Inside the Box

So glad you guys still find time to drop by.

I spent the past few months in Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn. Bilang isang dakilang practicumer. I've been to different departments, I've met new set of friends, most of them, I know, I'll be keeping in touch with for the rest of my life.

Experience, is indeed, the best teacher. I learned that your skills and your job can just get you so far, but the people you work with will give you enough strength and courage that can allow you to go even farther.

Hala! Wala pa akong prac report! Syet! 3 weeks to go! May Language Proficiency Exam pa! *Inhale..Exhale* Anxiety attack. Sorry.

Oblivion

My friends and I had reached the point in our lives wherein we’re unceremoniously thrown in the middle of the jungle, against our better judgment, and armed with nothing but our indecisive instincts. To say that we’re L-O-S-T is an understatement and too cliché to be real.

I was left two (or was it three?) agonizing years behind, so you would have thought that they had already prepared me for this. Unfortunately, it was not the case. Too late to realize that no amount of pep talk and warning rants could have made my arrival any less difficult and untimely.

I’m getting more and more anxiety attacks and it’s not making my situation any easier. With dead tired body and spinning mind, I would find myself wide awake at odd hours in the damn morning just thinking. I just want to be contented, is it too much to ask?

Who made this stupid maze, anyway? I’ve been trying to find the right way all these time and all I’m getting is an accumulation of frustrations. I’ve shed too much tears already. My friends (including the love of my life) had given me enough warnings, but here I am, much more off the course than I’ve ever been. Can somebody please hand me the manual? Sirit na Lord oh!

The more that I’m trying to conceal the difficulty I’m going thru, the more that even my body is betraying me lately. Seems Mr. Stress is getting the best of me. (Do I still look 18? I mean, 23?!)

*********

A Thursday dinner with my soulfriend and another good friend at Tiendesitas. Tiyangge-hopping right after dinner. Sound-tripping inside my good friend's car in search for a perfect coffee shop. Chit-chat until 12 midnight over a cup of joe.

The best moments in my life are those that I spend with them. When I think about our 10 years of friendship, I always knew I can make it thru.

Prac & More

Prac Days 1 & 2 were fun. Exhausting but enjoy naman. I was assigned in Crowne's HR Dep't - na walang bakas ng cell signal - (while Jac in Holiday Inn) and multi-tasking mode ito. Although may mga petiks moment, mas marami pa rin yung "Armine..could you please..?"

Name it, I've most probably done it.

10 hours/day. So 20 hours down. *whew!

Ayun, di ko na masyadong ie-elaborate kasi wala pa namang ganung ka-super exciting na naganap..except sa short moment I spent with my co-beauty queens...Miss Earth ang event kagabi eh. hehehe! And Jac hated me for not telling her na andun ako sa Ballroom.

*speechless* ...tas basta... and every second in between... *deep sigh*

Sunday night blabbing

I have a very bad news.. our Marinduque Escapade won't push thru!!! whaaaaa!!!!! Ang lungkot!!!! Ayan, kasi super excited si Ann, naudlot tuloy. Hehehe! Kailangan ko raw mag-research ng another affordable destination (read: cheap) for us on the last weekend of October. Where the hell is Zamabales-Capones Island, Ann Kristine??? I've got this funny feeling na mauuwi lang kami nun dito sa bahay ko, or basta within the vicinity of Rizal, as she strongly despised. Hehe! Wag naman sana!

Anyway, practicum day 1 tomorrow for me and Jac. I wonder kung saan department kami ma-a-assign? No housekeeping, oh heaven forbids! Sapat na ang AIM endeavors, perfected ko na ang beddings, thank you very much.

I watched HP3 premiere in HBO. Yey! Can't wait for HP4! Sana it's gonna be a tk event again. or betteryet, together with Fixed5, why not? This is one of the best Sundays ever! Kasi I had nothing to do but to sleep, food trips, and watch TV! Ang dream life ng gaya kong....errr... who appreciates the simple luxuries in life (a.k.a. tamad).

Oh well, it's another week! Woohoo!

Dairy Dose Milk Bar: 1/5 Gold + 4/5 Friendship

Sobrang saya, sobrang busy, sobrang petiks, sobrang lungkot, sobrang dreams, sobrang disappointments, sobrang galit. Eeeww!! Sabi nga ni Rhyan, "very chummy!!! Ack!!!" hahaha! Kinailangan niyang kunin ang mic at mag-speech, "Hindi kami umiiyak ng dahil naka-gold kami. Umiiyak kami kasi naging sobrang close kami. At ngayon, tapos na ang lahat. Ito na yun eh! Practicum na lang eh!" Even Ma'am Roscom and Ma'am Parker ay nagpupunas ng luha. Nyahahaha! Hindi kami GC's, kundi more than anything else, masaya kasi kaming manggago. (Way back during Cactus days!)

Nyahahaha! No goodbyes.

Hindi ako nagtataka kung bakit at one point in my life eh minahal kita nang sobra-sobra. Salamat, dude.

Test of your whole character talaga. Pero yung experience, yung roller-coaster ride of emotions, yung hatred, love, patience and friendship, iba 'to.

Nyahaha!!!

Shallow and Superficial

I just have to get this off my chest.

How can some people in my course (specifically faculty) be very shallow and superficial?! I can understand how important it is to look pleasant in our so-called industry, but changing who you are is way overboard, pare! They are forcing us to be somebody that we are not! They had just degraded humanity several inches down the notch, it's really disappointing. As Ma'am Karen (obviously not from my course) said, why are they forcing all of us to wear skirts if some of us are not comfortable with it? What the hell is wrong with slacks?! Why are they forcing us to wear "heavy" make-up if some of us, again, are not comfortable with it? Why do they have to impose on us their "ideal perception of beauty"?!?! And I've heard that faculty people were even criticizing/laughing at our resume pictures just because some of us don't look good on camera, or at least they thought so. Talking about Shallow-mindedness, Hall of Fame. And they call themselves, "Professors"?!?!?! Boo!!! Sana lang kasi perpekto sila!

Again, comment nga ni Ma'am Karen, getting the job is about who you are, what you've learned from the academe and experiences, about your character, your attitude, and NOT about how people see how beautiful your face and body are. Wala kaming balak mag-GRO for crying out loud!!! Langya, I'm no beauty queen. But even if I were one, wala akong balak pumasok sa trabahong ang tingin sa akin ay isang palamuti. I would rather be acknowledge for my brain, my attitude and my compassion.

They should be teaching us how to be confident about ourselves. To be true to ourselves. To be happy with what we have, with who we are. To feel beautiful inside and out. And not to conform to their kababawan sense of kagandahan!.

UP Kong Mahal

I'm missing school!!!

- psychotic laugh of Ma'am Parker)

Humdrum

I watched the prime time news, and saw Atom doing his stunts there.... oh man.

Had the best time with my 104 groupmates earlier. We managed to pull it off together. We're still the best. hehe.. Jay had made my day. We always have a great time fooling around with this cool guy. You'll never think that there's a "generation gap" separating us.

Where the hell can I find that book, "Men are from Mars; Women are from Venus"? I've been wanting to shoved a copy of it into my boyfriend's hand..you got the drift?

This is one tiring day. Fun, tiring day.

School, Suicide and Scolio

I used to hate Mondays. Not anymore, or rather at least not as much as I used to. Even though this semester is really a hell lotta school loads for me, I don't mind at all. My friends make it more tolerable. They actually give me reasons to look forward to another day. (Have I lost my mind?!)

I got a news from my soulfriend. She told me about her friend's dad attempting suicide.... I was like.. whoa... *the sentences that followed had been hidden*

On the other news, I'm thinking of going for that stupid Pilates thingy that my friend (and my mom) is constantly prodding me. I feel like my scolio will strike its revenge sooner than later.
It's another day! Woohoo!
